I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead; I lift my lids and all is born again. (I think I made you up inside my head.) The stars go waltzing out in blue and red, And arbitrary blackness gallops in: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made you up inside my head.) God topples from the sky, hell's fires fade: Exit seraphim and Satan's men: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I dreamed that you bewitched me into bed And sung me moon-struck, kissed me quite insane. (I think I made you up inside my head.) God topples from the sky, hell's fires fade: Exit seraphim and Satan's men: I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. I fancied you'd return the way you said , But I grow old and I forget your name. (I think I made you up inside my head.) I should have loved a thunderbird instead; At least when spring comes they roar back again. I shut my eyes and all the world drops dead. (I think I made you up inside my head.) Meaning: The poem is about Sylvia dreaming about having a normal life outside of her darkness. In the poem ,she has one line of happiness, then it goes into a darkness. She uses the word "waltzing" in order to give the feel and innocence of happiness. But in the next line, she brings in The feelig of "arbituary blackness" making it never ending hurt, until " she closes her eyes and all the world drops dead" She then makes a reference upon satan, and i guess to forget about it, starts to dream about her ideal man, the shuts her eyes so the world would drop dead . When she speaks WHEN SHE SAYS I SHUT MY EYES AND ALL THE WORLD DROPS DEAD, SHE IS REFFERING TO HER OWN ESCAPE FROM THIS WORLD THAT DOESNT ACCEPT HER THE WAY SHE WANTS TO BE ACCEPTED. The way the poem is wrote, you can tell sylvia was kind of messed up in the head. She feels as if dreaming, takes away the pain of depression, but she always comes back to it. Shortly after, she committed suicide. RIP Sylvia P.
