Anne Sexton
You are the roast beef I have purchased and I stuff you with my very own onion. You are a boat I have rented by the hour and I steer you with my rage until you run aground. You are a glass that I have paid to shatter and I swallow the pieces down with my spit. You are the grate I warm my trembling hands on, searing the flesh until it's nice and juicy. You stink like my Mama under your bra and I vomit into your hand like a jackpot its cold hard quarters. Buying The Whore By Anne Sexton is the title of the poem that explains it all. It is about a man literally buying a hooker and having sex with the hooker. The speaker of the poem is a man who just rented a whore to have sex with him. He is describing to himself, the intercourse that they are going through. The tone the poem has is an imaginative type of tone. The reason it has an imaginative tone is because the way he describes the situation. The man uses multiple metaphorical phrases to describe the way she is and how they are having sex. He says that, "You are the roast beef I have purchased and I stuff you with my very own onion." He is being very descriptive in his language while he is having sex. He compares their intercourse to glass shattering and nice and juicy flesh. The Descriptive words give you a sense of imagination and make you picture the descriptions that he is giving. The other tone that could be hinted at is a dark tone. It is about prostitution and what it is like going through prostitution. The situation at hand makes you feel bad for the woman and makes you feel sad as it puts you in her place through the man's description of their intercourse. The subject at hand is sex and prostitution because that is what the poem is talking about. The man focuses most of his thoughts on his intercourse with the prostitute, therefore the subject is sex. In all, the poem has a dark tone, yet it is imaginative at the same time.
