Reading the poem "I am in need of music" by Elizabeth Bishop makes me realize how soothing music can be. In her poems she describes the reasoning for wanting to listen to music and what music does to her. For most people, music gives the same affect. Bishop uses the feeling of how music is associated with many people lives by describing her use and need of music and how she feels when she listens to it.
Elizabeth Bishop picks music to describe her hobby for relief because it relates to many people lives. There are many people who would defend the point that music helps them with everything. Reading her poem one can infer that she was going through a tough time. The only escape out of her dilemma was to listen to something that would fall upon her head and take away the pain.

I am in need of music that would flow
Over my fretful, feeling fingertips, Over my bitter-tainted, trembling lips, With melody, deep, clear, and liquid-slow. Oh, for the healing swaying, old and low, Of some song sung to rest the tired dead, A song to fall like water on my head, And over quivering limbs, dream flushed to glow! There is a magic made by melody: A spell of rest, and quiet breath, and cool Heart, that sinks through fading colors deep To the subaqueous stillness of the sea, And floats forever in a moon-green pool, Held in the arms of rhythm and of sleep. Elizabeth Bishop takes her poetry on another level with her poem "Argument." In this poem, different from previous ones, she describes her situation with a long distance relationship. Most people may perceive this poem to be about a specific argument to another character. Although this argument is not with another character, its still an argument: between a character and nouns taking place as characters. Bishop uses the nouns distance and days to emphasize an issue most people have with long distance.
When a person first read this poem, it may be taken as though Bishop wrote this to express a romantic feeling. Reading it over and going in depth to reveal what the words are meant to mean, it shows no romantic relationship. She chooses her words wisely as the pronoun "you" gets tossed throughout the poem. The readers have no explicit idea on who the argument is being based off. All the readers know is that distance and days separate the two. In the second stanza, the subject is being more detailed. She has distance with colons instead of quotation marks to explain the realness and keep it in a reality form. Colons are usually used to explain something and within the second and third stanza, distance and days are explaining something. They give reasons on why distance and days are important to remember. Knowing this sends the reader a message about the two main sources that make up an argument about a long distance relationship. Win an argument with Distance, you still have to argue with Days. Winning both arguments is the solution to a long distance relationship. Reply Forward Days that cannot bring you near
or will not, Distance trying to appear something more obstinate, argue argue argue with me endlessly neither proving you less wanted nor less dear. Distance: Remember all that land beneath the plane; that coastline of dim beaches deep in sand stretching indistinguishably all the way, all the way to where my reasons end? Days: And think of all those cluttered instruments, one to a fact, canceling each other's experience; how they were like some hideous calendar "Compliments of Never & Forever, Inc." The intimidating sound of these voices we must separately find can and shall be vanquished: Days and Distance disarrayed again and gone... |
